How To Communicate Sexual Concerns With Your Healthcare Provider
When it comes to discussing sexual health, many women feel uncomfortable or uncertain about how to bring up the topic with their healthcare provider (HCP). However, open communication about sexual concerns is crucial for your overall well-being and can lead to better care and more effective treatment.
As a clinician who specializes in women’s sexual health care let me guide you on how to approach these conversations with your HCP confidently.
Acknowledge the Importance of Sexual Health
Sexual health is an integral part of your overall health, impacting not just physical well-being but emotional and mental health. Recognizing this helps you prioritize these discussions during your healthcare visits.
Remember, your HCP is there to support all aspects of your health, including your sexual well-being. Even if not a part of your routine screening, be sure to prioritize your intimate wellness concerns
Prepare Ahead of Time
Before your appointment, take some time to think about your concerns. Write down any symptoms, questions, or topics you want to discuss. Being prepared can help you stay focused during the conversation and ensure you don’t forget anything important. It’s encouraged that you bring notes or a list of questions to your appointment.
Start the Conversation
There may not be a perfect time to initiate the conversation regarding sexual dysfunction with an HCP, but it doesn’t have to be awkward. The best time to discuss these concerns with your healthcare team is when you are ready to do so. There is no need to wait on screening exams or if and when you are asked about sexual health by your provider.
Schedule an appointment that is solely dedicated to your intimate concern and stay focused on your primary concern(s). You might start with a simple statement like, "I have some concerns about my sexual health that I’d like to discuss." This opens the door for your HCP to provide the support and information you need in an initial evaluation.
Be Honest and Direct
Clear communication is key to getting the care you need. Be as specific as possible about your symptoms or concerns. Whether it’s about pain during intercourse, changes in libido, or concerns about sexual function, providing detailed information helps your HCP understand your situation and offer appropriate advice or treatment options.
Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions
Understanding your diagnosis, treatment options, and what to expect is essential for managing your health effectively. Some clarification that may be key in your care may be:
Questions about information that you have been provided and don’t fully understand
Ask about ongoing follow up for any treatment provided
Discussions about expectations for lab result follow-up and/or expected education
Ongoing communication is key to effective treatment and ensures that your healthcare remains tailored to your needs. Asking questions shows that you’re engaged in your care and ensures that you leave the appointment with the information you need.
Advocate for Yourself
Remember, your HCP should be present to help. If you feel that your concerns are not being taken seriously or addressed fully, it’s important to advocate for yourself. You have the right to seek multiple opinions or ask for a referral to a specialist if necessary.
Your sexual health is important, and you deserve to receive the most thorough care possible through providers who can validate your concerns. With self-awareness, acknowledgment, and advocacy, preparation to prioritize your concerns, direct and open communication, an optimal patient-provider alignment can be reached to lead to successful treatment for sexual dysfunction.
